The Goal

The homeowner wanted a full exterior repaint in new colors, moving away from the gray body and blue trim the house had before. The job covered the body, the trim, and the garage door trim, plus the deck and handrails. Our job was to get the house painted in the colors they picked, with the siding problems fixed first and paint built to hold up through Southern Oregon's hot summers and wet winters.

Starting Condition

Before we started, the house had peeling paint and T1-11 siding that was cracking and splitting in places. T1-11 is grooved plywood panel siding, and those grooves and panel edges are exactly where water gets in once the paint film on top starts to fail. Once that happens, the plywood underneath swells and shrinks with the weather, and the panels split along the seams. You can see it clearly in the before photos, especially along the fascia and eave edges, where paint had flaked and lifted away from the wood. Southern Oregon's climate does not do this siding any favors either. Hot, dry summers with strong sun bake and dry out the paint film, and wet winters get moisture into any gap that opens up. Over enough seasons of that cycle, a paint job that looked fine eventually starts to fail.

Preparation

Prep started with sanding the old paint back and filling voids where the wood had gapped or chipped. On the sections of T1-11 that were actively splitting, we applied Sherwin-Williams PrimeRx Peel Bonding Primer before any topcoat went on. This is a high-build primer made for weathered, peeling surfaces like this one. It seals and bonds to areas that are only marginally prepped, and it bridges and fills over spots that are already peeling or cracked, so it is stabilizing the surface instead of just covering it up. It goes on milky white and dries clear, and it is made to work under Sherwin-Williams exterior acrylic topcoats. Painting straight over splitting panels without that step just traps the problem under a new coat. The paint might look fine for a season, but the wood keeps moving underneath it and the new paint film cracks along the same lines as before. Bonding and stabilizing the siding first is what makes the new paint job last.

Products & Colors

The body was painted Snowbound, SW 7004, a soft warm white, in Sherwin-Williams Emerald Exterior Acrylic Latex, satin. Emerald is Sherwin-Williams' top exterior line. It is self-priming, so it works as paint and primer in one product, and it is backed by a Lifetime Limited Warranty. It uses cross-linking technology that resists blistering and peeling, holds up against fading and dirt pickup, and includes a mildew-resistant coating, which matters through a wet Southern Oregon winter. Satin gives the body a slight gloss without looking shiny, a common choice for exterior walls because it stays easy to clean without drawing attention to every surface imperfection. The trim, including the fascia, gable trim, window frames, and garage door trim, was painted Tricorn Black, SW 6258, a neutral true black, also in Emerald Exterior Acrylic Latex, satin. The deck and handrails were coated in Sleepy Hollow, SW 9145, a light, cool gray-green with a blue cast, using SuperDeck Exterior Deck & Dock Coating. As Austin Getz, our sales consultant, put it during the walkthrough: "Emerald is Sherwin's top-of-the-line exterior paint. Highly recommended."
